What is a meta-program?

"perceptual filters that we habitually act on . . . patterns we use to determine what information gets through" (Excerpt from NLP: THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO NEURO-LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING)

The book mentioned above dives further into several meta programs. Which of these sounds most like you? Where on the continuum do you fall? How can you use that information to help you achieve your goals?

  • options ↔️ procedures - many ways or a "right way"?
  • toward ↔️ away-from - motivated by a positive or negative outcome?
  • proactive ↔️ reactive - take initiative or wait?
  • internal ↔️ external - do you use your own standards or solicit feedback?
  • general ↔️ specific - "big picture" or "in the weeds" thinking?
  • match ↔️ mismatch - look for similarities or differences?

Once we are aware of our thought patterns, we can use that information to our advantage instead of letting auto-pilot control us.
